Moehau Environmental Group   Print House Ltd

  MEGaphone newsletter Moehau Environment Group (MEG) is a volunteer organisation that has been working in the northern Coromandel for almost 10 years and currently has projects covering 10,500 hectares.
These include:
  • Kiwi Protection Area - 8,500 hectares of stoat traps. At the start of this operation only 6% of kiwi chicks were surviving past 6 months, now 70% make it and kiwi numbers in the northern Coromandel are growing!
  • Possum control areas totalling approximately 3000 hectares.
  • Rodent control projects:
    • one of 350 hectares of forest lands;
    • one of 60 hectares of salt marsh and wetlands.
  • Restoration planting projects of 5 hectares.
Each year MEG runs environmental education programmes including a Summer Holiday Programme.
With some 20-plus activities this gives all ages the opportunity to experience and learn from nature.
Throughout the year MEG runs programmes in schools and work with at risk youth involving them in community conservation projects.
MEG also manage over 50 international volunteers from around the world each year. "Their efforts, along with local volunteers and environmentally committed land owners all add up to great on the ground results," said Jonty Rutherford, MEG Coordinator.
