As Print House celebrated its 21st birthday in April we entered what could definitely be described as one of the most difficult periods of our history.
Print House was formed in 1988 through the merger of Printing Establishment of Cambridge and Express Print of Hamilton. In 1988 when these companies merged the economy was feeling the harsh affects of the 1987 sharemarket crash... now 21 years later we, along with many other businesses, are in survival mode as we endure the current global financial crisis. While these economic difficulties mean that many organisations must re-evaluate their expenditure budgets and ensure greater attention to doing the basics well, this is also a time when community loyalty should be at its most prevalent. Some say the 'grass is greener' in the Waikato, so let's prove it! In my opinion buying local is one way we can ensure businesses in the Waikato have opportunities to survive this downturn. Most business owners have huge investments in technology, buildings and machinery with great personal risk to themselves, but endeavouring to keep people employed is a key consideration if we are to ensure a quick turnaround in the economy. I suppose it ultimately comes back to setting an example and having integrity in the way your company or organisation does business. Sadly in difficult times it often seems evident that integrity becomes a 'dirty' word for some people. Alas, it is all too easy to appear cynical and I admit that the pressures of a downturn can make one so, however I believe that one of the pillars of a sustainable business is to remain dedicated to clients, staff, and to create solutions to suit their ever-changing needs. Among the profiles in this issue of Printing Plus are projects for The Waikato Winter Show, Karamu Valley Lodge and The Wintec School of Media Arts. You will note from the Wintec article that they have made the commitment to making a difference by using PEFC certified papers. It is terrific to see this initiative within our local community. All the best,
