Danger at Devils Cove Marilyn Bakker has worked with Print House from her Auckland office for a number of years, however it was only recently that we learned of her passion for writing. So it was with great pleasure that Print House was able to provide assistance with the production of her first children's book, 'Danger at Devil's Cove, the Adventures of Josephine Mary Cresswell'.

The Author
Creativity was always encouraged in Marilyn's family home where her father, Albert James Arthur, was a prolific writer of short stories, poetry, music and lyrics.
'Danger at Devil's Cove' was originally told by Marilyn to entertain her grandchildren on the long drive to and from the family's holiday home at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula.
The children found the story so captivating that granddaughter, Nicole, pleaded for it to be put into writing.
"When I joined a writers' group it was the first project I tackled and was encouraged by members of the group to complete my first book," said Marilyn. "I am also working on an adult crime fiction novel and would like to complete a trilogy of the adventures of Josephine Mary Cresswell.
"As 2009 was the 10th anniversary of my parents' death I wanted to honour them with the publication of my first children's book."
Professional assistance from friends and colleagues together with funds generously contributed by Creative Communities Scheme - Manukau City helped Marilyn realise that goal and the book was launched in December 2009 under the banner of the Arthur family name.

The Book
Set on Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, in the 1950s, 'Danger at Devil's Cove' is a fast paced adventure story with an imaginative edge. It has many levels so can be enjoyed by children 10+ to adult.
Suddenly orphaned, Josephine Mary Cresswell's world crumbles and she is thrust into a new environment, moving to live with an aunt who is a virtual stranger.
At her new school Josephine makes friends with Tommy, the son of the local constable, but falls foul of Prudence, the school bully. When Prudence goes missing Josephine and Tommy set off to search for her in an abandoned gold mine and inadvertently stumble across a covert operation which ultimately leads to Devil's Cove.
Facing many challenges, Josephine struggles to choose the right path and in the process comes to better understand who she is.
On the surface, Danger at Devil's Cove is a rollicking adventure story with ample action to keep the reader's interest through to the last subtle twist. The more advanced reader may pick up on themes of temptation, choice and consequence and the struggle between good and evil.
Whilst Danger at Devil's Cove is a fictional adventure story set in the 1950s, it contains references to early gold mining in the 1850s, and to World War II.

The Production
Having committed the story to type, Marilyn commissioned Reuben Horn and Pati Ahsue to create illustrations which add a visual dimension to the story.
Editor Lynnaire Johnston of Word Wizard gave Marilyn valuable feedback and advice prior to the final 'cut' which was typeset and designed by Marilyn herself.
With the print-ready PDF file to hand Print House proceeded to print the 204 page single colour book on their Komori Lithrone offset press.
The cover, also designed by Marilyn, is embellished with red foiling, a matt laminate and boasts fold-out flaps which 'hold your page' nicely.
Print House congratulates Marilyn on her accomplishment and looks forward to assisting with future productions.
