WDHB Book WDHB 125years logo When Waikato Hospital was opened in May 1887 the facilities consisted of a five room cottage and was staffed with a caretaker, an orderly and a medical officer. It was affectionately reffered to as the 'cottage on the hill'.
From these humble beginnings, the hospital has developed into the biggest hospital campus in Australiasia. Now known as the 'village on the hill', it occupies 21 hectares, houses 621 inpatient beds and supplies over 5,000 jobs.
"Dealing with Print House, a local printer, made the process so much easier. They were involved right from the start when we made an application to Waikato Health Trust for funds, and throughout the design process. I know the staff there are very proud of their involvement in the book project and they have every right to feel that way. Our thanks to them - this book is very much a locally produced and printed effort. I take great pride in that personally."

Last year a group of journalism students from Wintec's School of Media Arts were assigned a project to document a 'day in the life' of some of the non-medical staff groups that make up the Waikato Hospital community.
"What the students' work showed me was that there were other stories to tell," states Mary Anne Gill, Communications Director of Waikato District Health Board.
"We had a wealth of unpublished historic photos. We have today's staff, both clinical and non-clinical, with fascinating stories about their jobs at Waikato Hospital. Here was our chance to celebrate 125 years."
So, what began as a Wintec journalism project has culminated in a 160 page, case bound tribute to the staff working at Waikato Hospital in its 125th year.
Funded by the Waikato Health Trust, this impressive publication is aptly titled The Village on the Hill; Celebrating 125 years of Waikato Hospital.
The book focuses on the people that make up the hospital community, on the non-clinical staff as well as nurses and doctors.
Photographs spanning more than 100 years tell their own story about this evolving community, while the profiles of current staff, volunteers and service people create a snapshot in time of the 'village on the hill' that is Waikato Hospital.
With first hand experience of projects of this nature, the team at Print House were able to offer expert advice on each stage of the project from start to finish.
Print House congratulates Mary Anne Gill and her team along with Wintec on the successful completion of this memorable keepsake.
