Fieldays Exhibitor Success Story for Wintec Students   Print House Ltd

In 1967 when the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays were in the planning stages for the first event, the steering committee declared the aims of the event were:
  1. To increase public awareness of agricultural research, production, machinery and marketing.
  2. To weld the city and country together in a major project for the benefit of all in the region.
  3. To provide significant exhibitions, events and activities to attract visitors from overseas and other parts of New Zealand to the region.
Fieldays Exhibitor Now, forty years after the first event was held, it is evident that these aims have been met, and well surpassed.
With access to such a multi-faceted event right on our doorstep, local schools and tertiary educators have taken full advantage of the opportunity to develop the skills which are being taught within their curriculum.
Of particular note is the collaborative approach that Wintec presents to its journalism, photography, and graphic arts students.
Such a major event certainly warrants being reported on and Wintec students undertake this task each year by presenting an informative publication for the exhibitors - 'Fieldays Exhibitor'.
The publication is produced daily during the 4-day event, providing students with real-time experience of working within the constraints of deadlines, while also supplying the exhibitors with an interesting and informative daily paper.
Standard issues delivered on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were 12 page, self cover publications followed up with a bumper issue produced for Saturday boasting 16 pages.
Print House received the print-ready PDF files between 5pm-6pm each day and proceeded to create plates and print that night.
Collating, folding and trimming took place early each morning in time for pick up at 6am.
This year's project was overseen by Editor-in-Residence at Wintec, Julie Starr. Julie commends the students on their tireless efforts in this assignment and says, "Producing the Fieldays Exhibitor is a terrific experience for students because it's the first time they work to real deadlines in an authentic newsroom setting. It's a lot of fun, but a huge effort for everyone concerned.
"We're grateful to Print House for turning it around so quickly for us each night, and for taking the time to come and work with us. It makes a real difference when Jonny [Print House prepress supervisor] comes in to show our design students how to set up output profiles and talk about the output process, and it's great that students get a guided tour of the print operation itself."
In keeping with Wintec's commitment to supporting a sustainable environment, all issues were printed on PEFC certified stock and were endorsed with the PEFC logo.
At Print House we believe that sustainable business depends on the development of the skills of our younger generations. We are delighted to continue to work with Wintec towards a common goal and at the same time produce a first class publication.
